Why casual fans misread matchups

Overvaluing reach

Long arms help, but they do not matter if the fighter cannot control distance. Fighters like Israel Adesanya use reach well because their footwork keeps them at the end of their jab. A long-armed plodder gets timed and countered.

Ignoring stance switches

Some fighters change stance mid-fight. A southpaw on paper might fight orthodox for three rounds. Look at their last two or three fights, not just their listed stance.

Treating grappling as binary

"He is a wrestler" is not enough. Does he chain takedown attempts? Does he threaten submissions or just hold position? A grappler who only smothers is very different from one who hunts finishes.

Ignoring pace and cardio

A stylistic edge in round one means nothing if the fighter fades by round three. Check how they perform in championship rounds. Some explosive starters get dragged into deep water and fall apart.

Questions and answers

How is the compatibility score calculated?
It combines stance matchup, reach difference, striking vs grappling balance, and historical performance against similar archetypes. A score of 50 means neutral. Above 60 favors the left fighter stylistically. Below 40 favors the right.
Can I compare fighters not in the roster?
Use the "Custom Fighter" option at the bottom of each dropdown. Enter name, stance, reach, and style tendencies manually. The comparison works the same way.
Why does a shorter reach fighter sometimes score well?
Reach is one factor. A fighter with a strong grappling game can neutralize a reach advantage by closing distance. The score weights all four categories, not just physical measurements.
How often is the roster updated?
After every major UFC card. New signings, stance changes, and updated stats get added within a week of each event.
Does this predict who wins?
No. It shows stylistic edges. Upsets happen all the time. Use this to understand the fight, not to lock in a bet.
